New online cloud based information database to launch in March
Starting next month, staff from across Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) will no longer need to reference the old green printed lab guidebook when ordering lab tests. In March, the antiquated guidebook will be replaced with a new searchable online database which will offer accurate and easy to read instructions for each test available through the KHSC labs.
“One of the more difficult aspects of the old guidebook is that as a hardcopy printed version, if something were to change with a test, it was very hard to make sure everyone had that updated information,” says Dr. Lewis Tomalty, Service Chief of Clinical Microbiology at KHSC. “With our new online database we will be able to make changes and they will immediately be accessible to the end user, ensuring they always have the most up-to-date information.”
The tool was specifically designed to be easy to use for patient care teams across the hospital.
“It’s a bit like our version of Google,” says Dr. Tomalty. “When you open the database you land on the homepage that features a search bar right in the middle. Type in the kind of information you are looking for and it will bring back all of the different types of lab tests we have available that match your search terms.”
The user can then click from the options presented to them and the database will tell you everything you need to know about how to collect the sample, information on when and how it should be taken, what kind of tube/container the sample should be placed in, and how to transport it to the lab. The actual ordering of tests will still take place through our PCS system.
